Mutual Desire to Connect with Nature Bridges Generational Gaps, KOA Report Reveals

Kampgrounds of America (KOA) released its latest Camper Profiles report, shedding light on the evolving landscape of camping and outdoor hospitality. The report, part of the larger Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report series, highlights a 68% increase in active camping households over the past decade.

The demographic makeup of campers has diversified, now including a wider range of ages. Notably, 60% of campers begin their outdoor adventures before turning 18, fostering a lifelong appreciation for nature.

Typical campers embark on one to two trips per year, averaging 6.7 nights annually. Their primary goals are to slow down and enjoy the moment (57%) and seek varied camping experiences such as witnessing natural events (50%).

KOA President and CEO Toby O’Rourke emphasized the importance of understanding diverse camper motivations to enhance the outdoor hospitality experience.

“By understanding the many different types of campers and their motivations, operators can enhance the outdoor hospitality experience to foster a more inclusive and enjoyable environment,” said O’Rourke.

New campers are also more diverse, with 52% being Gen X and Boomers. Additionally, a significant portion, 54%, prefer campgrounds with extensive services and amenities, and 48% consider 48% considering Wi-Fi the most important amenity.

According to a press release, generational preferences vary, with younger campers drawn to adventure-based experiences and older generations favoring comfort. Millennials often opt for family-friendly trips, while Gen X campers prefer RVs or cabins. Additionally, boomers and the silent generation favor the leisurely pace of RV camping, exploring national parks and scenic routes.

The 2024 Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report reveals opportunities for campground and outdoor hospitality operators. By adapting to evolving consumer preferences, owners and developers can ensure repeat visits and growth.

With over 60 years of experience, KOA operates the largest system of privately owned campgrounds, including more than 500 locations across North America. The company supports campground owners with services in education, design, recruitment, marketing, and technology.
