Canvas and Tent Group Unifies Operations Under Bushtec Brand After 58 Years

South African tented accommodation specialist Bushtec is consolidating its operations under a single master brand, bringing together decades of experience in the design, manufacture, and delivery of tented structures and camp solutions for clients across multiple sectors, including hospitality and tourism.

The rebranding unifies the company’s heritage under the Bushtec name following nearly six decades of operation. According to the company, the move is intended to align its manufacturing, design, logistics, and project delivery capabilities under one brand while supporting future growth across its various markets.

Bushtec traces its roots to Canvas and Tent, a Ladysmith-based manufacturer established in 1968. Over the years, the company expanded from producing traditional canvas products into supplying tented accommodation and turnkey camp infrastructure for customers in sectors ranging from tourism and hospitality to mining, disaster relief, and government services.

For the outdoor hospitality sector, Bushtec’s history includes the development and manufacture of safari tents and luxury tented accommodation products. The company said it began producing safari tents during the 1980s before expanding into higher-end tented structures designed for tourism and lodge operators.

Today, Bushtec’s hospitality-related operations include the installation of luxury safari tents and other tented accommodation products through its Bushtec Creations division. The company serves clients in the leisure and tourism industries alongside its work in other commercial sectors.

Hans Hillebrand, Group CEO of Canvas and Tent, said the consolidation reflects a broader effort to bring the company’s capabilities together under one identity.

“This unification is a deliberate step to align our entire organisation behind a single mission: to provide our clients with the most reliable, mission-ready infrastructure solutions, backed by a legacy of proven performance and valuable experience,” Hillebrand told DefenceWeb.

The company said the unified structure will allow it to manage design, manufacturing, logistics, installation, and ongoing support services through a single brand. Manufacturing continues to be carried out from its Ladysmith facility, where products are produced for clients in domestic and international markets.

Bushtec reports having delivered more than 1,000 camps and accommodation projects in 83 countries across seven continents since its establishment. While much of that work has involved industrial, government, and institutional projects, the company says the tourism and leisure sectors remain important contributors to its business.

For glamping operators, safari lodges, and other outdoor accommodation providers, the announcement highlights the continued role of specialist tent manufacturers in supplying structures that combine traditional canvas-based designs with modern engineering, insulation, climate-control systems, and modular construction techniques.

The consolidation under the Bushtec brand comes as interest in tented accommodation continues across various tourism segments, including luxury safari experiences, eco-tourism developments, and glamping destinations seeking alternatives to conventional accommodation structures.
