River’s Edge Campground in Johnson City has been named Park of the Year in the small park category by the Texas Association of Campground Owners (TACO), recognizing campgrounds with fewer than 125 sites.
The award was presented April 21 during the association’s annual Spring Meeting and Convention at the Lone Star Convention & Expo Center, an event that draws campground and RV park operators from across Texas.
The 57-site campground opened in May 2024 and is situated on the Pedernales River in the Texas Hill Country, between Austin and Fredericksburg. The 100-acre property includes 45 RV sites, four tent sites, five cabins, and three covered wagons.
Amenities at the campground include a two-mile hike and bike trail, a nine-hole disc golf course, sports courts for sand volleyball, basketball, pickleball, and cornhole, and a playground featuring slides and a large chess game.
Recreational activities on-site include fishing, swimming, tubing, and kayaking along the Pedernales River.
River’s Edge Campground was developed by Stuart and Alanya Berthiaume with their three children. The family has a background in real estate and previously owned and operated Hill Country Lakes RV Campground in Spicewood for 17 years.
The Berthiaumes began developing the property after deciding to build a campground aligned with their preferences, following years of RV travel across the United States and Canada with their children.
“Our vision was to create the best of both worlds, an authentic, nature-focus camping experience with trails, space and trees, paired with resort-style amenities,” Alanya Berthiaume said in a press release.
Construction of the campground took four years and involved contributions from their children, Mitchell, 24, Weston, 26, and Tessa, 28.
TACO, based in Crowley, represents more than 430 campgrounds, RV parks, and resorts across Texas and has operated for 54 years.
