Wisconsin State Park System to Celebrate 125 Years of Outdoor Adventures in 2025

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced plans for a year-long celebration in 2025 to mark the 125th anniversary of the Wisconsin State Park System. The initiative invites the public to explore the state’s parks, forests, trails, and recreation areas while participating in special events and learning about the system’s history.

“More than 20 million people visit Wisconsin’s state parks and forests every year to enjoy the great outdoors,” Steve Schmelzer, director of DNR parks and recreation management, highlighted the popularity of the parks to Burnett County Sentinel.

Wisconsin is a recreation destination, and we are excited to provide a special experience to our visitors this year.”

Established in 1900 with the founding of Interstate Park, the Wisconsin State Park System began with land acquisition following legislative approval in 1899.

Over the decades, the system has expanded to encompass over 307,000 acres, including 50 state parks, 44 state trails, 15 state forests, and several recreation and river resource areas.

Diane Brusoe, administrator for the DNR’s Fish, Wildlife, and Parks division, described the anniversary as an opportunity to honor the system’s legacy in resource stewardship and tourism while looking ahead to enhance accessibility and public health.

The DNR plans to highlight various initiatives during the anniversary year, focusing on improving access to public lands and recreational facilities, introducing adaptive and universal recreation equipment, and fostering partnerships with community programs.

Efforts will include innovative technologies, such as online pass sales platforms, and skill-building programs aimed at beginners.

Events and activities throughout 2025 will be announced on the DNR Events calendar, with contributions from Friends Groups, volunteers, and community partners playing a key role in their success.

Equipment rentals, including gear for kayaking, bicycling, and other activities, will be available to encourage new participants and support skill development.

The DNR encourages visitors to purchase 2025 vehicle admission passes early, with options for daily and 12-month passes available online. Notably, 12-month passes purchased in 2025 will be valid for a full year from the date of purchase, rather than expiring at the end of the calendar year.

Camping remains a popular activity within the Wisconsin State Park System, with over 6,000 campsites offering various options, including accessible sites and cabins for individuals with disabilities.

Reservations are required for all campsites, and the DNR recommends booking early for the 2025 season. A notification feature on the reservation site can alert users when desired sites become available.

Additional information about the anniversary celebrations will be shared on the DNR’s OutWiGo webpage, a resource promoting outdoor activities to enhance health and wellness.
