Wisconsin DNR Invites Feedback on Statewide Outdoor Recreation Plan Draft

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is inviting public feedback on the draft Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP), an essential roadmap for outdoor recreation in the state according to a press release

The SCORP examines the availability and demand for recreational opportunities in Wisconsin, alongside an analysis of the factors motivating residents to engage in outdoor activities and the challenges they face in doing so.

Updated every five years, the SCORP ensures Wisconsin’s eligibility for the Land and Water Conservation Fund State Assistance Program, a federal initiative established in 1965.

This program aims to bolster the nation’s health and vitality by supporting the acquisition and development of outdoor recreation resources. Through the program, states receive matching grants to develop and maintain public recreation areas, ensuring equitable access to quality outdoor spaces.

Wisconsin residents can share their thoughts on the draft SCORP by completing the online input form on the DNR’s Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan webpage.

Comments may also be submitted via mail, phone, or email to John Pohlman, DNR Property Planner, by December 15. Following the public comment period, the DNR will review the feedback and make any necessary adjustments before submitting the final plan to the governor.

This plan is critical to the future of outdoor recreation in Wisconsin and beyond. By addressing barriers to participation and identifying ways to improve access and infrastructure, the SCORP supports a growing outdoor recreation economy and strengthens the connection between communities and nature.

Engaging the public in this process ensures that outdoor recreation resources remain inclusive and sustainable, fostering physical health, mental well-being, and environmental stewardship for years to come.
