Washington Enacts Fifth-Wheel Length Measurement Law With Passage of House Bill 2467

The RV Industry Association (RVIA) announced the enactment of House Bill 2467 in Washington, a measure that clarifies how fifth-wheel trailer length is calculated under the state’s existing 46-foot limit.

The legislation was signed March 16 by Bob Ferguson and is scheduled to take effect June 11, 2026.

The new law establishes a standardized method for measuring fifth-wheel trailers, requiring length to be calculated from the center of the kingpin to the rearmost extremity of the vehicle. The clarification is intended to ensure consistency in how compliance with the state’s length restriction is determined.

Under the legislation, plan approvals in Washington will be required to specify that a fifth-wheel trailer meets this measurement procedure.

House Bill 2467 was developed by a coalition of RV dealers in Washington who raised concerns about the ability to sell a full range of fifth-wheel trailer lengths under the previous interpretation of the law.

According to a News and Insights report of RVIA on March 19, the effort was led by LaDonna Meadows of Tacoma RV, who also serves on the RV Dealers Association Executive Committee.

During the legislative process, four RV dealers testified in support of the bill. Michael Ochs also provided testimony backing the measure on behalf of the RVIA.

The law is expected to provide greater regulatory certainty for stakeholders across the RV sector in Washington, including manufacturers, dealers, and consumers, by removing ambiguity in how fifth-wheel trailer length is measured and enforced.

RVIA has served the RV sector for 50 years and operates offices in the Washington, D.C., area and Elkhart, Indiana. The association represents more than 500 manufacturers, component makers, and aftermarket suppliers that collectively produce 98% of all RVs in the United States and approximately 60% of RVs worldwide.

The association functions as the industry’s primary trade voice, working to unify a diverse range of stakeholders and build alliances across the sector.

In collaboration with its members, it supports efforts to advance the industry and drive growth and innovation across the broader outdoor market landscape.
