Wonderland Retreats, an adults-only glamping destination in Carnforth, Lancashire, is reporting a third consecutive year of being fully booked every night of the year, with its operators attributing demand in part to a focus on differentiated accommodations and one-night stays.
The retreat opened in 2023 and was created by local couple Sam and Shauna. The property comprises five themed glamping pods, each designed around a different interpretation of the Alice in Wonderland concept and equipped with distinct layouts and amenities.
The five accommodations include The Mad House, which features outdoor baths, a wood-fired hot tub, sauna, outdoor shower, ice bath and cold-water plunge bucket, as well as an indoor cinema and arcade machine. Alice’s Secret Garden includes a private garden, countryside views and an outdoor bathtub overlooking a private pond.
Hearts Hideaway is designed around a Queen of Hearts theme and includes a private hot tub, romantic garden and outdoor cinema bed. The Rabbit Hole combines Alice in Wonderland-inspired interiors with an outdoor entertainment area and private sauna, while Hatter’s Hideout includes a pool table, arcade machines, private cinema setup, sauna and freestanding bathtub.
The property has also received wider exposure in 2026 after appearing on Channel 4’s Four in a Bed, a television program in which accommodation operators stay at and assess one another’s properties. According to the Lancaster Guardian, the appearance has provided Wonderland Retreats with an additional opportunity to present its accommodation model to a national audience.
For operators in the glamping sector, the retreat’s reported occupancy also highlights how product differentiation can be incorporated into a small accommodation portfolio. Rather than replicating the same unit several times, Wonderland Retreats has positioned each of its five pods as a separate experience, giving returning guests a reason to book a different unit.
Another factor is the property’s one-night booking policy. Wonderland Retreats allows guests to book single-night stays during much of the year, compared with the two- or three-night minimums commonly used by some luxury glamping businesses. For operators evaluating minimum-stay policies, the approach illustrates a potential trade-off between maximizing length of stay and capturing demand from guests seeking shorter breaks.
Shauna said: “When people hear the word glamping, they often imagine a row of cabins that all look exactly the same. We wanted to create something completely different. Every pod has its own personality, theme and experience. Guests can stay with us five different times and have five completely different breaks.
“Seeing how popular the site has become since we opened in 2023 has been incredible. We’re now in our third year of being fully booked every night, and having the opportunity to showcase Wonderland Retreats on Channel 4’s Four in a Bed has made this year even more exciting for us.”
The reported booking performance comes as glamping operators continue to compete not only on accommodation quality but also on the experience offered around each stay. Wonderland Retreats’ model demonstrates one way a small site can use themed accommodations, differentiated amenities and flexible stay lengths to build a distinct market position without relying on a large number of units.
