Pennsylvania State Parks Welcome Anglers for Trout Season and Offer Overnight Accommodations

As Pennsylvania’s trout season swings into full gear, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) is inviting anglers to make the most of state park campsites and lodgings for their overnight fishing trips.

Governor Josh Shapiro’s recent budget address highlighted the numerous advantages of Pennsylvania’s state parks, with proposed investments aiming to enhance the enjoyment of the state’s parks, trails, and forests for all residents, according to a report by The Express.

DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn emphasized the excellent opportunities for fishing and camping available at state parks, particularly during trout season.

Our state parks are a prime destination for both activities, and we look forward to welcoming anglers as they venture outdoors this spring,” Dunn said.

To accommodate the increased demand during trout season, the DCNR has opened additional campsites and overnight lodgings. Pennsylvania boasts 86,000 miles of rivers and streams, along with thousands of lakes and ponds. Anglers with the proper fishing license can enjoy access to over 100 state parks and 20 state forests that permit fishing.

Tim Schaeffer, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, praised the state’s public access to water for fishing and boating.

More than 70 state parks are being stocked with trout this season, and many offer camping opportunities to make your fishing adventures even more memorable,” Schaeffer said.

Anglers can reserve campsites and other lodgings at state parks online on a first-come, first-served basis or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757).

The service operates Monday through Saturday, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, except on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. The DCNR’s website provides a comprehensive list of state parks offering trout fishing with campsite or lodging availability.

Visitors should check the individual parks for specific camping options, as certain accommodations, such as cabins, yurts, and lodges, may already be reserved. A fishing license is required for fishing in Pennsylvania, and further information on obtaining one can be found on the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s website.

Anglers planning to fish from a boat during trout season should be aware of the PFBC’s cold weather life jacket requirement, which is in effect from November 1 through April 30. Under this rule, anyone aboard a boat 16 feet or less, including all canoes and kayaks, must wear a life jacket.

In collaboration with the PFBC, the American Sportfishing Association, and DCNR, certain parks offer the public the opportunity to borrow fishing rods, reels, and equipped tackle boxes for free.

This initiative aims to make nature more accessible to all Pennsylvanians and encourage them to try fishing or reconnect with the pastime. A list of participating parks can be found on the DCNR’s website. Those interested in using the loaner equipment should contact the park office to check availability.
