Virginia Campground Association Names Susan Motley as New Executive Director

The Virginia Campground Association (VCA) has announced the appointment of Susan Motley, CAE, as its new executive director, effective November 1. The decision follows a comprehensive selection process by the VCA board, which voted in favor of Motley.

The board expressed confidence in her ability to steer the association towards growth and success, citing her extensive experience and leadership in various professional and trade organizations as key factors in their choice.

Motley brings over two decades of experience to the VCA, having worked with diverse sectors, including outdoor hospitality, healthcare, and engineering. Most notably, she held the position of vice president of member programs at OHI, where she played a significant role in the growth of the George O’Leary National School, guiding it to celebrate its 30th anniversary with record participation. Her background and expertise are expected to enhance the VCA’s mission, ensuring continued support for its members.

Outgoing Executive Director Hilton Snowdon will conclude his tenure on October 31.  Snowdon, who has led the VCA since January 2024, has maintained the association’s “stability and continuity” during his time in office. Under his leadership, the VCA remained organized and responsive to member needs, ensuring that services were delivered efficiently. Although he will step down from his current role, Snowdon will stay involved with the VCA as the publisher of its directory.

In addition to her professional experience, Motley holds the Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential, a certification held by fewer than 5% of association professionals, highlighting her organizational strategy and member engagement expertise.

Apart from the CAE certification, Motley has further distinguished herself with certifications in instructional design and workforce diversity. She earned these from the Association of Talent Development and the University of South Florida’s Muma College of Business. Additionally, her certification as a Gallup StrengthsFinder Coach demonstrates her commitment to fostering development and inclusivity within organizations.

Motley’s deep-rooted connection to Virginia’s camping community also adds to her appeal as the new executive director. Growing up in Danville, Virginia, in a family passionate about camping, she has been actively involved in the state’s camping scene for years. Living in Richmond for over 30 years, she and her husband frequently visit campgrounds across the state.

“We couldn’t be more excited about this next phase in VCA’s journey. Susan’s impressive experience, her love for outdoor hospitality, and her engaging leadership approach will usher in a period of growth, innovation, and opportunity for all of our members,” a press release stated.
