Jackson County Parks is replacing aging campsite amenities at Howard Prairie Resort county park with more than 200 new concrete picnic tables and steel fire pits, part of ongoing improvements intended to reduce maintenance needs and improve campground facilities.
The new tables and fire pits have begun arriving at the park, and Jackson County Parks expects all the equipment to be onsite by the end of next week. The county plans to install the amenities at campsites soon after their arrival. The upgrades will replace the existing wooden picnic tables and rusted fire pits throughout the park.
The concrete picnic tables are designed to withstand snowy winter conditions and are expected to reduce long-term maintenance costs. Unlike wooden tables, the concrete alternatives will also eliminate splinters, potentially reducing one source of maintenance and guest-safety concerns for campground operators.
For outdoor hospitality businesses, the project highlights how replacing aging infrastructure with durable materials can support long-term facility management. Although concrete tables may require a different initial investment than wood alternatives, their resistance to weather-related wear and reduced need for routine repairs could help lower maintenance demands over time.
Operators considering similar upgrades may also need to account for transportation, installation, accessibility, and the cost of replacing multiple units across a property.
The latest additions follow a series of infrastructure improvements at Howard Prairie Resort that have taken place since 2013, according to KDRV12. These projects have included the replacement of older, deteriorating campground restrooms with two new fully accessible facilities, a complete replacement of the campground’s electrical infrastructure, and the construction of a new marina.
Other improvements have addressed buildings, utilities, and the campground’s paved areas. The lodge building received a new roof, while a backup generator was installed for the sewer lift station to provide additional support for wastewater infrastructure. New pavement has also been installed throughout the campground and day-use areas.
Taken together, the projects demonstrate an approach to campground investment that extends beyond guest-facing amenities. Restrooms, electrical systems, wastewater equipment, roads, and recreational facilities all contribute to the operation of a campground and can influence the visitor experience.
For private campground and RV park owners, Howard Prairie Resort’s ongoing improvements offer a reminder of the value of planning capital projects across multiple asset categories. While visible upgrades such as picnic tables and fire pits can improve the appearance and functionality of individual campsites, investments in utilities, accessibility, and circulation infrastructure can also support daily operations and help address maintenance issues before they become more costly.
The county has not specified the total cost of the new tables and fire pits or provided a final installation date. The current rollout is expected to continue as the remaining amenities arrive and crews begin placing them at campsites.
