Spacious Skies Campgrounds Pioneers Culturally Conscious Camping Through Strategic Partnerships, Specialized Training

Spacious Skies Campgrounds is leading the way by championing culturally conscious camping. As the industry evolves, this company is setting itself apart by intertwining diversity, inclusion, and specialized training into its core ethos.

Having recently celebrated its 2 ½-year anniversary, Spacious Skies Campgrounds is not just another name in the camping world. Co-founders Ali and Eric Rasmussen, both fervent campers, identified a significant disparity in the diversity of campers during their excursions. This realization birthed a vision: to cultivate a camping environment that is as diverse as the world outside. Today, with 15 campgrounds spread across the East, their vision is becoming a reality.

Ali Rasmussen’s reflections on the company’s journey are heartening. During a recent tour of their campgrounds, she noted a marked increase in guest diversity. For her, camping is more than just an activity; it’s about ensuring every individual, irrespective of their background, feels welcomed and at home, be it in a tent, an RV, or a cabin.

“Eric and I toured the entire Spacious Skies collection in July, and we witnessed an uptick in diversity among our guests. That makes me encouraged and determined to continue our efforts,” said Ali Rasmussen. “As a lifelong camper and frequent solo camper, I know how important it is to feel comfortable in your camping place, regardless of whether it is a tent, RV or cabin. We strive to make sure that every one of our guests feels like Spacious Skies Campgrounds is a true home away from their homes.”

A significant milestone in their journey towards inclusivity is the partnership with Black Folks Camp Too (BFCT). This alliance has distinguished Spacious Skies Campgrounds as the first private campground company to collaborate with BFCT, an organization that fervently promotes the outdoors to individuals from diverse backgrounds. The “Unity Blaze Certification” that all their campgrounds proudly hold is a testament to their unwavering commitment to inclusivity.

Their association doesn’t stop there. Collaborations with prominent groups like Girl Camper, which focuses on empowering female campers, and their support for LGBT Outdoors and Latinos Outdoors, further solidify their dedication to creating a diverse and inclusive camping community.

Furthermore, their commitment to the environment is evident in their involvement with the National Forest Foundation Sapling Program. This initiative is centered around reforestation, and Spacious Skies Campgrounds has taken a proactive approach by donating for every review they receive, amassing a notable contribution of $1,111 in 2023.

The success of Spacious Skies Campgrounds offers a blueprint for the future of camping. Their emphasis on culturally conscious camping, backed by strategic partnerships and specialized training, is not just a business model but a vision for a more inclusive and diverse outdoor recreation industry. As the camping landscape continues to evolve, Spacious Skies Campgrounds stands as a beacon, illuminating the path towards a more inclusive future for all.
