Vosburg Neck State Park in Pennsylvania has announced a schedule of public programs for October, offering activities focused on fishing, nature education, outdoor recreation, wellness, and family programming.
The month’s events begin Tuesday, Oct. 6, with a Catfish Meet-Up from 5 to 7 p.m. Registration is required. Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission staff will host the gathering, which is designed as a social, on-water fishing experience with limited formal instruction. Participants may bring their own equipment or use equipment provided by the commission. A fishing license exemption will be in effect for the program.
On Thursday, Oct. 8, and Thursday, Oct. 22, the park will host Little Explorers from 1 to 2 p.m. The biweekly program is designed for children ages 3 to 6 and their families and uses stories, crafts, experiments, pretend play, and outdoor exploration to introduce nature concepts. Both sessions will meet at the Spruce Grove Picnic Area, and registration is required.
Saturday, Oct. 10, will feature two programs, according to the Wyoming County Press Examiner. Fall Nature Journaling begins at 1:30 p.m. Participants can bring their own journals or use supplies provided at the event. The group will meet at the Spruce Grove and may move to other areas of the park. Later that day, Fall Qigong will begin at 3 p.m. The 45- to 50-minute session will introduce participants to Qigong through movement, breathing, and other restorative practices. The activity is led by a certified instructor and can be adapted for participants using a chair. Registration is required.
On Saturday, Oct. 17, Beginner Catfish Fishing will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. The program is intended for new anglers or those seeking a refresher on basic catfish fishing techniques. Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission staff will provide instruction and an on-water experience, with equipment available for participants who do not have their own. The fishing license exemption also applies to this program.
The park’s October programming will continue Friday, Oct. 23, with Jeepers Peepers at 7 p.m. The family-oriented activity will explain eyeshine, the phenomenon that can make animals’ eyes appear to glow in low-light conditions. Participants will then take part in a short, self-guided scavenger hunt along Walnut Loop. A flashlight or headlamp is required.
On Saturday, Oct. 24, Making Maple Leaves will run from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The registration-based program combines information about Pennsylvania’s native maple species with modular origami. Supplies will be provided, although children may need assistance from parents or guardians.
That evening, at 7:30 p.m., Vosburg Neck State Park and Endless Mountains Heritage Region will host a Full Moon Hike. The four-mile route will combine the Canal, Eagle and River trails with Vosburg Road. Registration closes Thursday, Oct. 22. Participants are encouraged to bring water, suitable clothing and hiking footwear. Flashlights and headlamps are encouraged to remain off during the hike but may be useful when returning to vehicles.
The month’s final listed program is Homeschool Day: Monster Motion on Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The registration-based activity is designed for homeschool and cyberschool families and will use experiments involving moving worms, floating ghosts, and flying bats to introduce chemistry and physics concepts. Registration is required by Oct. 21, and the program will take place outdoors.
For outdoor hospitality businesses, programming such as this illustrates how public lands can create activity-based reasons for visitors and local families to spend time outdoors beyond traditional sightseeing. Campgrounds, RV parks, glamping resorts, and other operators in markets near state parks can potentially use nearby public programming as part of destination information provided to guests. Sharing event calendars, registration requirements, accessibility information, and seasonal activities can also help visitors plan their stays around activities in the surrounding area.
Programs requiring registration can be accessed through Pennsylvania’s online events calendar by searching for Vosburg Neck, or by contacting the park at 272-281-3266. Visitors requiring an accommodation due to a disability can contact the Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks at 1-888-PA-PARKS or 711 through AT&T Relay Services.
