Senators Propose Digital Park Pass for National Park Visitors

Senators Angus King of Maine and Steve Daines of Montana are leading the effort to develop a digital park pass to replace the current paper national parks pass.

The idea is being pitched to the National Parks Service, arguing that the digital version is faster and more efficient.

Park visitors must carry their paper pass along with their ID to gain access to over 2,000 locations included in the “America the Beautiful” pass.

The senators mentioned the necessity of the park system to take a modern approach to park visitations, saying in a statement that travelers today have “grown to expect the convenience of modern technology during daily activities.”

Presently, Acadia National Park in Maine uses an online entrance program. Senators affirm that the system has shown positive results.

An annual “America the Beautiful” National Parks pass costs $80 per year. Retired and current U.S. military and current fourth graders can get free passes. Seniors who are 62 years old and up can enjoy the pass at a discounted price of $20 per year or $80 for a lifetime pass.
