TRCP Study: Pennsylvania Generates Nearly $60B from Outdoor Recreation

Pennsylvania generated almost $59 billion in its economy In 2020 thanks to outdoor recreation such as biking, snow sports, camping, hiking, hunting, and fishing, according to research by the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP).

In the four prior years, the number increased by 26%, including $20 billion in salaries and wages for over 430,000 jobs, a 10% uptick in the employment rate in outdoor recreation from 2016.

Market research and economics firm Southwick Associates said that more than $6.5 in taxes on outdoor spending were added to federal, state, and local government revenues.

“The power of outdoor recreation spending in Pennsylvania is undeniable, particularly since hunting, fishing and boating provided a real lifeline to so many during the pandemic,” said Alexandra Kozak, Pennsylvania field manager for the TRCP.

“Conservation of our natural resources is critical for this to continue. That’s why our decision-makers should prioritize legislation that helps to invest in better habitat, cleaner water, and stronger outdoor recreation businesses.”

The TRCP and its partners intend to point to the strengths of the outdoor recreation economy when advocating investments in the state’s Growing Greener III program, which is a Clean Streams Fund and other dedicated conservation funding.

By category, the economic impact was $15,205,278,000 from trail sports, $14,033,823,000 from camping, $7,142,105,000 from water sports, $6,104,078,000 from biking, $5,260,280,000 from snow sports, $3,939,614,000 from motorcycle riding, $2,962,860,000 from off-roading, $2,125,611,000 from hunting  (including $1,319,241,000 in deer hunting), $1,043,934,000 from fishing, and $1,042,109,000 from wildlife watching .
