Pennsylvania Launches ‘Elevate’ Initiative to Boost Outdoor Recreation Economy

Pennsylvania has introduced “Elevate,” a new initiative aimed at bolstering its outdoor recreation sector, which supports more than 164,000 jobs and contributes $17 billion annually to the state’s economy.

Launched by Pennsylvania Director of Outdoor Recreation Nathan Reigner, Elevate seeks to engage businesses statewide to strengthen the industry by addressing growth barriers and positioning Pennsylvania as a destination for outdoor recreation. Reigner introduced the program during a visit to Easton Outdoor Company, highlighting the potential for business-driven development in the outdoor sector.

Through Elevate, the state aims to connect with a wide array of businesses involved in outdoor recreation, including manufacturers, retailers, experience providers, and artisans. According to a press release, Governor Josh Shapiro emphasized the significance of the outdoor industry to Pennsylvania’s economy and community well-being, underscoring his administration’s commitment to expanding this sector.

Shapiro sees the initiative as a tool for fostering interconnected support among businesses, thereby enabling job creation and enhancing the quality of life across the state.

“This initiative is an example of how our commitment to outdoor recreation can lift up communities, create good jobs, and fuel economic growth across Pennsylvania. Outdoor recreation isn’t just about business or economics — it’s about our quality of life and enjoying the incredible natural beauty we’re lucky to have here in Pennsylvania,” Shapiro added.

Pennsylvania’s outdoor recreation industry encompasses a broad range of enterprises, from local businesses like Easton Outdoor Company to large corporations like Dick’s Sporting Goods and Runner’s World magazine.

Reigner also underscored that Elevate is designed to engage businesses in a meaningful way, aiming to provide direct assistance that supports growth. He described Pennsylvania’s outdoor industry as a “diamond in the rough” with substantial untapped potential.

For business owners like Adam Fairchild of Easton Outdoor Company, the initiative represents an opportunity to strengthen not only his business but also the community. Fairchild noted that his store acts as an “ambassador” for Pennsylvania’s outdoor beauty, contributing to the revitalization of Easton’s Main Street. The support from Elevate, he said, would enhance his ability to serve the community while contributing to broader state goals for economic development.

The initiative has also garnered enthusiasm from local businesses that rely on Pennsylvania’s natural resources for tourism and recreation. Karen Prieto, owner of Twin Rivers Tubing, highlighted the collaborative approach of the Elevate initiative as a way to achieve greater success for businesses like hers, noting that support from the state could make a significant impact on their operations.

Easton Mayor Salvatore Panto also expressed optimism about the potential for branding Easton as a destination for outdoor activities, noting that the Elevate initiative aligns well with the city’s vision.

He remarked that outdoor recreation offers not only an economic boost but also opportunities for enhancing residents’ quality of life. By investing in outdoor resources, Panto believes Pennsylvania can position itself as an outdoor destination.
