Pennsylvania Bolsters Outdoor Recreation Sector with New Office and Historic Budget Investment

Pennsylvania has taken a significant step towards bolstering its outdoor recreation sector with the launch of the Pennsylvania Office of Outdoor Recreation by Governor Shapiro, according to a press release by the Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development.

This new office is part of a broader initiative to grow the state’s outdoor sector, which currently contributes $14 billion to Pennsylvania’s economy and accounts for 152,000 jobs.

The launch of this office underscores the importance of outdoor recreation to the state’s economy and the well-being of its residents.

It will coordinate efforts across various departments to create a cohesive strategy for the growth and expansion of the outdoor sector, ultimately ensuring Pennsylvania remains a premier destination for outdoor recreation.

In addition to the creation of the Pennsylvania Office of Outdoor Recreation, the state has allocated a $112 million budget investment for the 2023-24 fiscal year, the largest investment in state parks and forests in decades.

This investment will address a $1.4 billion backlog of needed infrastructure work, ensuring the maintenance and improvement of these vital public spaces.

The investment underscores the state’s commitment to preserving its natural resources and ensuring access to outdoor recreation for all Pennsylvanians.

The economic impact of the outdoor sector in Pennsylvania cannot be overstated. With nearly 40 million visitors each year, the state parks and outdoor recreation industry play a crucial role in boosting local businesses and economies in and around the parks.

The new office will work to further capitalize on this economic potential by promoting outdoor recreation opportunities, supporting local businesses, and attracting visitors from across the country and beyond.

Moreover, the outdoor recreation sector is a significant job creator in Pennsylvania, accounting for 152,000 jobs. The Pennsylvania Office of Outdoor Recreation will work to support and grow this workforce, providing opportunities for Pennsylvanians in various fields related to outdoor recreation.

From park rangers and maintenance staff to outdoor guides and retail workers, the outdoor sector provides a wide range of employment opportunities for residents of the state.

While the launch of the Pennsylvania Office of Outdoor Recreation and the significant budget investment are positive steps forward, there is still much work to be done.

The $1.4 billion infrastructure backlog represents a significant challenge that will require sustained effort and investment over time.

However, with the creation of the new office and the commitment of resources, Pennsylvania is well-positioned to address these challenges and ensure the long-term sustainability of its outdoor recreation sector.

The creation of the Pennsylvania Office of Outdoor Recreation and the $112 million budget investment for the 2023-24 fiscal year represent significant steps towards strengthening Pennsylvania’s outdoor recreation sector.

These initiatives will support the growth of the outdoor sector, create jobs, boost local economies, and ensure the long-term sustainability of Pennsylvania’s natural resources.
