The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources announced it will temporarily close the campgrounds at Lackawanna and Ricketts Glen state parks starting Sept. 8, for an $8 million rehabilitation project.
“Beginning September 8, 2026, the campgrounds at Ricketts Glen State Park will close for major renovations as DCNR replaces outdated shower and restroom facilities with new, modern, and accessible amenities,” the park announces on its website.
The Shapiro Administration is investing $4 million in upgrades at each park to enhance the visitor experience.
According to an article published by Fox 56 on January 15, overnight camping will not be available during the construction period, but day-use activities will continue.
Trails, picnic areas, and the lake will remain open for hiking, fishing, and other outdoor recreation.
Campers with future reservations can explore alternative options at nearby parks, including Frances Slocum State Park, Tobyhanna State Park, and Promised Land State Park.
The extended closure may affect travel plans but said the advance notice allows visitors to make alternate arrangements.
According to its website, Ricketts Glen State Park, one of Pennsylvania’s most scenic areas, spans 13,193 acres across Luzerne, Sullivan, and Columbia counties and features the Glens Natural Area, a designated National Natural Landmark.
Visitors can explore the Falls Trail System to see 22 named waterfalls, including the 94-foot Ganoga Falls.
The parks offer a wide range of accessible recreation opportunities, including boating, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and hunting, as well as picnicking, sightseeing, and wildlife watching. Visitors can also enjoy swimming, winter recreation, and overnight stays, ensuring year-round outdoor activities for all abilities.
Nearby, private campgrounds such as Council Cup Campgrounds and Red Rock Mountain Campground provide alternatives for visitors.
Council Cup Campgrounds, a family-focused private facility, offers full-service RV sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups, shower houses, and a coin-operated laundry. The campground is pet-friendly and includes an on-site store stocked with food, firewood, and other essentials.
Red Rock Mountain Campground also offers a more rustic private camping experience with primitive tent sites that include access to a central bathhouse with showers and toilets, and select units feature full kitchens.
