Visitors to the park and campers at Gifford Pinchot State Park (Pennsylvania) will be unable to swim or enjoy other lake activities due to the toxic algae.
According to the park’s Facebook page, the lake’s conditions make the water prone to harmful algal blooms (HABs) that release toxic compounds and other substances that could harm humans, animals, or wildlife.
As of writing, the Facebook post yesterday, August 18, states that the HABs advisory level has been updated to a warning level, which limits water activities such as swimming and contact with the water.
“The swimming areas at the Quaker Race Day Use Area and the campground beach are closed until further notice,” the Facebook post reads.
The use of paddle boards or boating in areas with discoloration or foam is also not allowed. The park officials urge guests to clean up immediately after contact with the water.
The closure of water sources will be lifted once regular water tests confirm acceptable recreation levels.
As per Pennsylvania State Parks, Gifford Pinchot State Park is a 2,338-acre full-service park in northern York County.
The park provides camping, boating, fishing, disc golfing, hiking, picnicking, and swimming opportunities where visitors can opt to stay in group tenting areas, yurts, cottages, cabins, and pavilions.
Amenities include a playground, a volleyball court, and horseshoe pits.
