Over 80 campground operators from the New Jersey Campground Owners Association (NJCOA) gathered in the Southern Shore vacation region for the 2024 NJCOA Fall Tour and General Membership Meeting, held from September 17-19.
The event, organized by NJCOA Executive Director Joann DelVescio, featured a packed schedule of activities, tours, and presentations designed to foster collaboration and professional development among campground owners.
Participants toured 10 campgrounds in the region, attended presentations on key industry issues, and participated in networking opportunities. The event included special presentations, a tour of Driftwood RV Center, and a fundraising auction.
According to a press release, DelVescio emphasized the importance of these gatherings, stating, “Campground operators are busy professionals with limited time. When we’re able to gather, we try to pack a lot into the agenda so we can get the most out of the opportunity to meet, mingle, learn, and share best practices.”
One of the highlights of the event was the Q&A session with high-level representatives from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). During the September 17 lunch, attendees discussed water and sewer regulations and concerns about the permitting process.
Another key moment was a dinner presentation by Nor’Easter Nick Pittman, a meteorologist and the president & CEO of NorCast Media Group. Pittman talked about weather forecasting, offering humor and insights into how operators can better understand weather patterns and their impact on campground operations.
On September 18, NJCOA’s lobbyist, Alexis Bailey, gave a breakfast briefing on legislative activities that could impact the outdoor hospitality industry. Bailey highlighted several bills, including those focused on tourism budgets, heat stress standards, and the use of single-use plastic utensils.
Bailey’s advocacy on behalf of the campgrounds was praised by DelVescio, who said, “Our lobbyist, Alexis, does an exceptional job advocating for our campgrounds and making sure we’re well informed about issues that can both help and hinder our industry.”
The tour also featured a visit to Little Hooves Farm at Ponderosa Campground, where attendees learned about the farm’s rescue animals and the facility’s care efforts, supported through donations.
During the association’s annual meeting, NJCOA President Justin Crane announced the winners of the year’s campground awards, recognizing the achievements of several campgrounds across various categories.
Kymer’s Camping Resort in Branchville received the Best Brochure award, while Four Seasons Family Campground in Pilesgrove was recognized for Best Event with its Tavern Night.
Little Oaks Campground in Cape May Court House won the Best Photo and Most Creative Activity awards for its Human Soccer Balls event. Ocean City Campground & Beach Cabins in Woodbine earned the Best Website award.
