GE Appliances, a Haier company, has launched its first in-house water filter manufacturing operation at Appliance Park, marking a significant expansion of its U.S. production capabilities.
The new facility, part of the company’s ongoing $3 billion investment in American manufacturing, aims to produce millions of refrigerator water filters annually while strengthening consumer safety and supply chain resilience.
The advanced manufacturing line allows GE Appliances to design, test, and produce water filters under one roof, reducing reliance on third-party suppliers and combating counterfeit products that can compromise water quality and appliance performance.
“This investment is exactly what advanced manufacturing should look like in America,” Bill Good, vice president of Manufacturing for GE Appliances, said in a press release. “We’re combining cutting-edge automation, digital tools and highly skilled teams to build a manufacturing operation that raises the bar on quality and efficiency.”
Officials praised the initiative as a boost to the state’s economy and workforce. “I’m proud that Kevin Nolan and the entire GE Appliances team trust Louisville’s Appliance Park to successfully launch the company’s first-ever water filter manufacturing operation,” said Governor Andy Beshear.
The facility features fully automated assembly and packaging, robotic pick-and-place systems guided by machine vision, 100% in-line air leak testing, and genealogy tracking for end-to-end traceability.
James Downey, senior director of Water Filtration, said the new operation gives consumers “greater confidence they’re getting the genuine, certified filters they expect.”
The line was developed using virtual reality, digital twin technology, and advanced simulation tools, allowing engineers to optimize design before installation. The operation ran on three shifts and created 30 new jobs, with potential for expansion. It was designed for lean manufacturing, energy efficiency, and ergonomics.
The move also strengthens GE Appliances’ efforts to fight counterfeit filters through partnerships with industry organizations, retailers, and online platforms. By producing filters domestically, the company aims to respond faster to demand, ensure quality, and protect consumer health.
