Billings KOA Holiday Campground Earns Certified Autism Center Status

Billings KOA Holiday Campground has received the Certified Autism Center (CAC) designation from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES).

This designation recognizes the campground’s efforts to make it accessible to autistic and sensory-sensitive guests. The certification process involved specialized staff training and a comprehensive on-site review to ensure the campground offers an inclusive experience for all visitors.

As part of the certification, Billings KOA Holiday updated its property signage and ensured its website met accessibility standards. Additionally, the campground plans to open a sensory room next year, providing a quiet space for guests who need a break from sensory stimuli.

Guests with sensory needs can also request complimentary sensory bags at check-in, which include tools like noise protectors and hand squeezers to help make their stay more comfortable.

According to a press release, Jill Currier, senior vice president of KOA Operations for Kampgrounds of America, Inc., expressed pride in the campground’s achievements. “We know that travel can be challenging for individuals and families with autism or other sensory sensitivities. We are proud to be named a Certified Autism Center, allowing us to create specialized programs and opportunities for all travelers to experience the joy of camping and the outdoors,” Currier explained.

IBCCES Board Chairman Myron Pincomb also praised the Billings KOA Holiday Campground, stating that the certification highlights their dedication to making camping more inclusive. “Their commitment to providing an accessible and welcoming stay for autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals is truly commendable,” Pincomb remarked. “We applaud their efforts and look forward to seeing the positive impact they will continue to make on every guest that visits.”

IBCCES, established in 2001, promotes autism and cognitive disorder training and offers certification programs for professionals in healthcare, education, and hospitality. The organization has developed industry-specific training to ensure staff are better equipped to accommodate the needs of neurodiverse individuals.

In addition to campground certifications, IBCCES created AutismTravel.com, a resource for families seeking autism-friendly travel destinations.
