REI Expands Outdoor Hospitality with New Grand Canyon Campground

REI Co-op, an outdoor retail and adventure travel operator, is setting a new benchmark in the outdoor hospitality industry with its latest venture near Grand Canyon National Park.

The company has acquired 20 acres south of the park, earmarked for a Signature Camp designed to enhance the camping experience for outdoor enthusiasts, as per a USA Today report.

This new campground will join REI’s portfolio of Signature Camps, strategically located near national treasures like Bryce Canyon, Zion, and Great Smoky Mountains national parks

These campsites are renowned for blending the rustic appeal of outdoor living with the comforts of modern amenities, catering to the evolving preferences of campers who seek a more refined outdoor experience.

REI’s forthcoming Grand Canyon site plans to feature 10 tents on elevated platforms, ensuring a comfortable and elevated camping experience. The design includes a communal fire pit, picnic area, and three communal restrooms with showers, encapsulating the essence of communal outdoor living while providing privacy and convenience.

Set off Alta Villa Road in Valle, the campground’s location is optimal, nestled between the rustic town of Williams and the majestic Grand Canyon National Park entrance. Its proximity to Under Canvas Grand Canyon and the quirky Bedrock City adds a unique flavor to the camping experience, blending natural wonders with cultural attractions.

The anticipated launch in spring 2025 marks a significant milestone in REI’s commitment to enhancing outdoor hospitality. Operating from April to October, the campground aims to accommodate the seasonal influx of tourists seeking to explore the Grand Canyon’s natural beauty.

REI’s Signature Camps concept has revolutionized camping, offering a comfortable and convenient way to enjoy the great outdoors. These camps are equipped with amenities like group cooking gear, cots, and sleeping pads, addressing the practical needs of campers and setting a new standard in the camping industry.

The strategic location and designed amenities of REI’s Grand Canyon campground present a model for campground and outdoor hospitality operators. By offering a mix of natural immersion and comfort, REI is tapping into the growing trend of glamping, providing insights for other operators to enhance their offerings.

Pricing for the REI camping experience underscores the premium value of convenience in nature. With trips starting at $2,099 for members, the cost reflects the quality and inclusivity of the service, providing food, lodging, and an unparalleled outdoor experience.

The variety of tours and trips, including a notable two-night hike and a comprehensive seven-night adventure encompassing multiple iconic locations, demonstrates REI’s commitment to offering diverse and rich outdoor experiences. These offerings not only cater to different preferences and budgets but also encourage longer stays and deeper exploration of the area.

For campground and outdoor hospitality operators, REI’s new venture is a case study in balancing nature with creature comforts, driving the industry forward. This approach attracts a broader demographic of travelers, from hardcore adventurers to those seeking a more accessible and comfortable way to experience the wilderness.

REI’s new Signature Camp near Grand Canyon National Park not only broadens the horizons for camping enthusiasts but also sets a new standard for the campground and outdoor hospitality industry.
