Wales Tops UK Family Camping Destinations, Outdoortoys Research Shows

Research into family camping destinations in the United Kingdom indicates that Wales leads the market for staycations, particularly for households looking to replace overseas travel with local breaks.

According to a study conducted by Outdoortoys, seven of the top ten destinations for family camping are located in Wales, reflecting a combination of green space, family-oriented attractions, and the availability of well-equipped campsites.

Gwynedd ranked first, offering the highest number of campsites per 10,000 residents in the UK. Sites range from coastal pitches near sandy beaches to locations beneath the mountains of Eryri National Park.

Pembrokeshire followed in second place, known for its mix of seaside scenery and activities such as rock pooling and walks along the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Isle of Anglesey completed the top three, providing a slower-paced experience suitable for cycling, beach activities, and barbecues.

Cornwall, Na h-Eileanan Siar, the Highlands, Merthyr Tydfil, Ceredigion, Powys, and Conwy also appear on the list, according to GBNews.

Nick Paulson, product and category manager at Outdoortoys, emphasized that family trips do not need to involve long-haul flights.

“Planning a family holiday doesn’t have to mean long-haul flights and complicated itineraries. What really matters is time spent together – outdoors, exploring, learning, and laughing,” he said.

He also noted that preparation is important, particularly in early spring or Easter when weather can be unpredictable. He recommended packing waterproof outerwear, spare socks, wellies, and warm sleepwear, along with simple activities like ride-on toys, cards, or coloring supplies to maintain engagement during rainy periods.

For professionals in the outdoor hospitality sector, these findings highlight trends in domestic family travel, suggesting that campsites offering flexible facilities, family-friendly programming, and outdoor activity options may see higher demand during peak spring and summer periods.

Understanding regional differences in campsite availability can inform decisions on expansion, marketing, and infrastructure development to attract family groups seeking accessible, local outdoor experiences.
