Lake District’s Skelwith Fold Named England’s Campsite of the Year

The 130-acre Skelwith Fold Holiday Park in Ambleside has been named England’s campsite of the year by the AA. Announced in November, the national recognition highlights the park’s exceptional offerings and services.

AA judges commended Skelwith Fold for its high standards and picturesque setting, citing its wooded grounds, nature trail, and premium accommodations, including luxury safari tents. The park, owned by the Wild family for nearly 30 years, underwent a thorough evaluation process before earning the accolade. Describing the site as “a park right at the top of its game,” judges underscored its commitment to quality and visitor satisfaction.

In addition to this national recognition, Skelwith Fold earned Cumbria Tourism’s holiday park of the year title earlier in 2024. The park has also been acknowledged for its environmental initiatives, including awards for sustainable development and conservation efforts.

Henry Wild, the owner of Skelwith Fold, expressed his gratitude for the award. “We feel both proud and humbled to have been selected for this amazing recognition from the AA, and it’s the icing on the cake for us after a very busy season,” he said.

Wild also credited the park team for the achievement, noting their role in maintaining a welcoming atmosphere for guests. “Delivering this is very much in the hands of our park team, so they must take a big share of the credit for ensuring that guests always enjoy the best possible experience,” he said, as reported by Cumbria Crack.

He emphasized the park’s focus on hospitality and returning visitors, saying, “We have received many messages of congratulations from our customers, the majority of whom are either repeat visitors or who come as the result of a personal recommendation.”

The announcement came as the park closed for its winter season, but Wild expressed enthusiasm for reopening in March. “The news from the AA came just as Skelwith Fold was closing for the winter in November, so we’ll be back with a very big spring in our step next March!” he said.
