Ballyburren Lodges Earns Tourism NI’s Highest Five-Star Accommodation Grade

Tourism NI has awarded Ballyburren Lodges, an adults-only glamping accommodation near Ballynahinch in County Down, a five-star rating under its accommodation grading scheme, recognizing the property for meeting the organization’s highest quality standard.

The recognition follows an assessment by Tourism NI, which evaluates accommodations based on factors including facilities, cleanliness, service, and the overall guest experience. The grading program is open to hotels, guest houses, bed and breakfasts, self-catering properties, hostels, and guest accommodations across Northern Ireland, with businesses eligible to achieve ratings of up to five stars.

According to Tourism NI’s assessment team, the three lodges at Ballyburren Lodges provide an “exceptional guest experience.” Assessors noted that the accommodations were “immediately impressive, with well-proportioned layouts and high-quality finishes.” The review also highlighted architectural features including a spiral staircase and large triangular windows overlooking surrounding forest and lake views.

Aine Kearney, director of events at Tourism NI, said: “Tourism NI is delighted to award a five-star accommodation grading to Ballyburren Lodges — the highest accolade possible.

“This achievement reflects the significant investment that has been made in providing a high-quality and fantastic broad range of facilities and services to guests visiting Ballyburren.

“The Tourism NI assessment found this accommodation offering to be impressive and exceptional and it is without doubt a well-deserved award and testament to the team. We wish them good luck in the future.”

Co-owner Damien Butler welcomed the recognition and told Belfast Telegraph: “We are absolutely delighted to receive this five-star recognition from Tourism NI.

“Achieving this grading is a fantastic endorsement of the quality, comfort and guest experience we strive to deliver.

“Being part of the Tourism NI grading scheme gives visitors added confidence when choosing accommodation and helps showcase the high standards Northern Ireland tourism businesses are achieving.

“For us, it reinforces our commitment to offering a unique luxury escape where guests can reconnect with nature while enjoying exceptional accommodation and hospitality.”

While Tourism NI did not announce the grading as part of a specific event or seasonal program, the recognition comes as Northern Ireland’s tourism sector continues to emphasize quality assurance and visitor confidence. Third-party grading systems remain an important marketing tool for accommodation providers, offering travelers an independently verified benchmark when comparing lodging options.

For operators in the glamping and outdoor hospitality sectors, independent quality certifications can also support broader business objectives beyond guest reassurance. Achieving recognized ratings may strengthen a property’s positioning in competitive markets, improve visibility through tourism marketing channels, and reinforce premium pricing strategies.

As demand for experiential outdoor accommodations continues to evolve, verified quality standards can help differentiate properties while demonstrating ongoing investment in facilities, service, and the guest experience.

The Tourism NI quality grading scheme is designed to provide visitors with a clear indication of accommodation standards, service quality, and cleanliness, helping travelers make informed booking decisions while encouraging continuous improvement across Northern Ireland’s hospitality industry.
