Kelling Heath Holiday Park in North Norfolk will host its second Wild Sky Weekend from Friday, September 25, through Sunday, September 27, following the introduction of the event last year.
The weekend will focus on stargazing and after-dark nature experiences, giving guests staying at the park an opportunity to explore the night sky and surrounding woodland. The program is designed for visitors of different ages and will include guided activities alongside self-guided options.
Claire Pemberton, guest experience director at Kelling Heath Holiday Park, told Great British Life: “Our Wild Sky Weekend is all about helping families experience the simple joy of looking up at our skies together.
“In a world where we’re often focused on screens and busy schedules, spending time beneath a truly dark sky offers a chance to slow down, reconnect with nature and spark children’s imaginations.
“As darkness falls, families can settle beneath Norfolk’s expansive skies to spot constellations, planets and satellites while warming up with a hot chocolate.”
Kelling Heath is designated as a two-star Dark Sky Discovery Site, reflecting the relatively low levels of light pollution in the area. The designation provides a setting for guests interested in astronomy while also giving the holiday park an opportunity to build programming around its natural environment.
Scheduled activities during the September 25-27 weekend include guided stargazing, bat walks, a glow-in-the-dark woodland trail for younger visitors and other nature experiences after dark. Guests can also take part in astronomy activities, learn about nocturnal wildlife and explore the woodland during daytime walks.
The park’s Dark Sky Viewing Platform and self-guided Dark Sky Activity Packs will provide additional ways for visitors to engage with the theme beyond scheduled activities. The combination of organized and self-guided experiences may allow operators to serve guests with different interests and activity preferences without relying solely on scheduled programming.
Most activities will be available at no additional cost to guests staying at Kelling Heath in camping, touring or hire accommodations, although some activities may carry a small charge.
For operators in the outdoor hospitality sector, events such as Wild Sky Weekend illustrate how natural assets can be incorporated into the guest experience and used to create programming around a property’s existing environment. Dark-sky tourism can also provide an opportunity to develop shoulder-season activities that do not depend on major infrastructure or large-scale attractions.
