L.A. Getaway Luxurious Glamping, led by Steven Michael Googoo and his family, is both a tribute to a late family member and an opportunity to showcase the area’s natural beauty and Indigenous culture.
The project, rooted in the We’koqma’q First Nation, is a deeply personal endeavor for Googoo. He shared that the sudden passing of his brother and business partner, Ryle, initially delayed the initiative.
“We put the project aside for a bit because truthfully, I lost my brother in November,” said Googoo. “The last time we ever spoke, I promised him that this project was going to keep going.”
Set on a 59.9-acre property near Lake Ainslie, the project will feature geodesic domes, RV sites, and outdoor amenities such as hot tubs, saunas, and walking trails.
The venture aims to cater to the growing demand for glamping experiences, blending luxury with nature. “We’re planning to build five geodesic domes and at least 10 RV or camping lots to start off small,” Googoo explained.
Beyond providing an upscale getaway, L.A. Getaway aspires to support regional businesses by creating a cohesive tourism ecosystem.
“My goal out of this is to unify all the small businesses on the Western part of the island and find a common platform where we can advertise all these businesses to the world,” Googoo told Cape Breton Post. He emphasized the potential for collaboration to elevate Cape Breton as a destination.
The project has garnered significant community support, reflecting the collective spirit of We’koqma’q. Local construction contractor Justin Googoo, owner of L’Nuey Construction, is among those assisting.
“Cape Breton is always known for its tourism, but with him being an Indigenous entrepreneur in this area… I hope he sees the uniqueness of his opportunity,” said Justin Googoo.
As development progresses, the venture symbolizes resilience and a commitment to cultural and economic revitalization. For business owners in the region, the initiative highlights the importance of collaboration in fostering sustainable tourism and community growth.
