Big Thicket National Preserve Offers Winter Activities

Big Thicket National Preserve is inviting visitors to explore the thicket and participate in a variety of activities during Texas’s winter-like weather. Ranger-led programs, an annual art show, and a feral hog trapping season are just some of the ways visitors can enjoy the preserve.

Ranger-led programs are a great way to explore the preserve and learn about the different aspects of nature. Visitors can join rangers on free nature walks on weekends, where they can learn about carnivorous plants, wildlife, and more, according to a news release.

The popular canoe trips provide a free and relaxing way to experience the waterways. Reservations can be made two weeks prior to each trip. The calendar of events is available for more information, and visitors can call 409-951-6700 to reserve their spot.

The annual art show, titled “People of Big Thicket,” was created in partnership with the International Fiber Collaborative (IFC).

The IFC worked with students from across the country to create over 70 pieces of art highlighting the people who explore and enjoy Big Thicket. The exhibition will be on display at the visitor center through the end of April.

Feral hog trapping season is also taking place, starting on Monday, February 6th. Preserve staff will issue free feral hog trapping permits at the visitor center on a first come, first served basis until all 50 permits have been claimed.

A Texas hunting license is required for trapping in the preserve. Feral hogs are an invasive species descended from pigs brought to North America by European settlers and have increased in recent decades due to a lack of natural predators.

Hogs’ feeding habits can cause major resource damage. Visitors are highly encouraged to review the Big Thicket feral hog trapping regulations and scout out several trap locations before obtaining a permit.

Big Thicket National Preserve has a variety of activities to offer visitors to enjoy the beauty of nature this winter, whether it be exploring the preserve with a ranger, viewing the art show, or trapping feral hogs. Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and review regulations before visiting.

Big Thicket National Preserve has a long-standing tradition of offering recreational opportunities such as hunting, fishing, and trapping since it was established in 1974. Each fall, the preserve permits public hunting of white-tailed deer, squirrel, rabbit, hog, and waterfowl.

In addition, public trapping of fur-bearing species is also permitted in the preserve. Visitors can find more information about hunting and trapping opportunities at https://www.nps.gov/bith/planyourvisit/hunting.htm.
