Michigan Department of Natural Resources Adds More Full-Hookup Campsites at State Parks

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced plans to add more full-hookup campsites to state park campgrounds across the state.

The move comes as part of a broader effort to enhance camping experiences and accommodate the increasing demand for camping facilities.

Currently, eight state park campgrounds offer full-hookup sites that provide access to fresh water, electricity, and sewer.

These sites are located at Aloha State Park in Cheboygan, Baraga State Park in Baraga, Hartwick Pines State Park in Grayling, Holland State Park in Holland, Orchard Beach State Park in Manistee, South Higgins Lake State Park in Roscommon, Sterling State Park in Monroe, and Wilderness State Park in Carp Lake.

The DNR has also announced plans to add full-hookup sites to Algonac State Park in Algonac and Bay City State Park in Bay City.

The projects will be funded by a proposed $4.1 million in federal relief funding from Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s Building Michigan Together Plan.

At Algonac State Park, the DNR plans to convert approximately 50% of the sites in the northern section of the Riverfront campground to full-hookup gravel sites and eliminate the north bathroom.

The project is expected to begin in fall 2023 or spring 2024, with no completion date yet set.

Bay City State Park will close its campground on September 5, 2023, to undergo a renovation project that will add several full-hookup sites. The project is expected to be completed and the park reopened in spring or summer 2024.

With the addition of more full-hookup campsites, campers in Michigan can now enjoy enhanced camping experiences that provide greater convenience and comfort during their stay.

This move by the DNR not only accommodates the increasing demand for camping facilities but also supports the state’s tourism industry by attracting more visitors to state parks

The use of federal relief funding from Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s Building Michigan Together Plan to fund the projects also showcases the government’s commitment to supporting the state’s outdoor recreation sector.

Overall, this news is important for anyone interested in camping or outdoor recreation in Michigan and demonstrates the state’s dedication to providing quality outdoor experiences for its residents and visitors.
