Clean Truck Partnership: Paving the Way for Eco-Friendly RVs and Camping

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced a “Clean Truck Partnership” on July 6, 2023, with various truck manufacturers and the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association.

This partnership includes significant entities such as Cummins, Inc., Daimler Truck North America, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Company, Hino Motors Limited, Inc., Izuzu Technical Center of America, Inc., Navistar, Inc., Stellantis N.V., Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association, and Volvo Group North America.

Under the terms of the agreement, CARB will align with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2027 NOx regulation and modify elements of the 2024 NOx emission regulations. Manufacturers will provide offsets as necessary to maintain California’s emission targets, as per the News & Insights report of the RV Industry Association.

CARB also commits to providing no less than four years’ lead time and at least three years of regulatory stability before imposing new requirements. Truck manufacturers commit to meeting CARB’s zero-emission and criteria pollutant regulations in the state regardless of any attempts by other entities to challenge California’s authority.

This partnership is a significant step towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation. It is particularly relevant to RV manufacturers and campers, as the move towards cleaner trucks will likely influence the design and production of RVs.

As RVs often utilize similar engines and technologies as trucks, advancements in truck technology can directly benefit the RV industry.

Moreover, the commitment to zero-emission regulations aligns with the growing trend of eco-conscious camping. Campers are increasingly seeking ways to reduce their environmental impact, and cleaner, more efficient RVs can significantly contribute to these efforts.

The Clean Truck Partnership, therefore, not only represents a step forward for the trucking industry but also for the RV industry and the broader camping community.

The agreement also includes a commitment from CARB and the manufacturers to work together to ensure that requirements in S.177 states are consistent with the terms of the new agreement. This collaboration will help to create a more unified and effective approach to reducing emissions across the country.

In addition to the environmental benefits, the Clean Truck Partnership could also have economic advantages for RV manufacturers and campers.

As the industry moves towards cleaner technologies, there may be new opportunities for innovation and growth. Furthermore, campers may benefit from potential improvements in fuel efficiency and performance in RVs.

The Clean Truck Partnership announced by the California Air Resources Board represents a significant step towards cleaner transportation. This partnership is not only important for the trucking industry but also has significant implications for RV manufacturers and the camping community.

By committing to cleaner technologies and zero-emission regulations, the partnership can help to drive innovation in the RV industry, promote eco-conscious camping, and contribute to broader efforts to reduce emissions and combat climate change.
