An award-winning touring caravan park near Gwalchmai on Anglesey has received planning permission to expand its tourism facilities with 11 additional pitches for self-contained motorhomes and touring caravans.
Anglesey County Council’s planners approved the full application for an extension to Maes Carafanau Penbryn on Lon Pentracha on August 25, 2026. The approved development will extend the existing park onto approximately 0.34 hectares of agricultural land currently used for dog walking.
The new pitches will be located immediately west of and adjoining the established touring caravan park. Like the existing pitches, they are planned to be fully serviced and will accommodate self-contained motorhomes and touring caravans.
The decision follows an earlier planning process involving a larger proposed development. An application to change the use of land for a 43-pitch touring caravan park was refused in July 2023. An appeal against that decision was subsequently submitted and was successful in June 2024, allowing the 43-pitch development to proceed.
According to NorthWalesLive, the latest application was submitted by Richard Evans of Maes Carafanau Penbryn, with Berwyn Owen of Berllan Properties acting as agent. According to the application, pre-application discussions with the council considered whether a further 11 touring pitches could be added to the site.
The application stated: “The permission originally granted at appeal was for 43 touring pitches and the Pre-Application advice sought direction on a possible increase in number of an additional 11 touring pitches.
“Overall the Pre-App advice indicated that the principle of the development is considered acceptable.”
Maes Carafanau Penbryn is described in the application as an established family-run business with hardstanding and fully serviced pitches. Its existing facilities include an amenity block, a free-range hen house supplying fresh eggs, a children’s play area, a dog-walking area and waste recycling facilities.
The main park occupies approximately 0.9 hectares, while the extension will use the adjoining 0.34-hectare area. The plans propose a one-way internal access system, with the application stating that the entrance has sufficient width to allow caravans and motorhomes to pass.
The applicant said: “There has never been any incidence of vehicular conflict within the site and this small addition is unlikely to change that position. This has proven to be a highly successful touring caravan park set within a highly sustainable location.
“Indeed the park has won a national award from Campsites.co.uk as the best (touring Caravan Park) newcomer in the UK. This is a credit to the owners and its success has of course prompted the demand for further pitches.”
For campground and caravan park operators, the approval illustrates how existing tourism businesses can pursue incremental capacity increases after securing permissions for a larger development. In this case, the additional pitches are being proposed alongside an established operation and existing visitor facilities, rather than as a standalone tourism site. The use of fully serviced pitches also allows the expansion to follow the service model already in place at the park.
The August 25, 2026 decision therefore represents the latest stage in a planning process that began with the refusal of the 43-pitch proposal in July 2023 and its successful appeal in June 2024.
