A campsite located near a scenic waterfall in Eryri has been named the best in the United Kingdom, topping a list of over 3,200 sites. Nantcol Waterfalls campsite, situated amidst the Rhinog mountains and near Shell Island’s sandy beaches, has garnered attention for its picturesque setting and amenities.
The site’s proximity to the Afon Nantcol stream, which runs through the area, and a nearby waterfall has drawn praise from visitors. Accommodations include traditional tent pitches and glamping options featuring TVs, WiFi, firepits, and underfloor heating.
The campsite has a history of accolades spanning nearly two decades and was recently recognized in the 2024 Camping and Glamping Awards by Campsites.co.uk.
According to a report by NorthWalesLive, it emerged as the top site in the UK, highlighting the growing appeal of North Wales as a destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Founder of Campsites.co.uk, Martin Smith, congratulated the winners, noting their role in adding adventure to everyday life.
In addition to Nantcol Waterfalls, other North Wales campsites received recognition. Bwch yn Uchaf, a riverside location near Bala, won the Best Budget Campsite award.
Nyth Robin, a woodland glamping site overlooking the Dyfi estuary, was named Best Greener Site, and Trwyn yr Wylfa in Penmaenmawr received the Best Newcomer accolade.
A total of 13 North Wales sites were celebrated in the awards, further underscoring the region’s reputation for quality staycation offerings.
Nantcol Waterfalls campsite features 85 grass pitches accommodating up to 10 guests each, as well as glamping pods and heated bell tents. On-site amenities include a shop, a pizza van during peak season, and modern facilities such as stone-clad shower blocks. The site’s appeal is reflected in guest feedback, with 94% of visitors recommending it.
Nantcol Waterfalls’ long history of recognition includes awards from publications such as the Daily Telegraph and The Guardian, as well as certificates of excellence from TripAdvisor. It has also been noted for its suitability for wild swimming and picturesque settings.
Campsites.co.uk’s awards come shortly after an Anglesey campsite was named the UK’s best by the AA, further highlighting the appeal of North Wales as a camping and glamping destination.
