Managing campground occupancy and guest arrivals is becoming increasingly complex as millions of new travelers enter the outdoor hospitality market. More than 52 million North American households camped in 2025, according to KOA’s 2025 Camping & Outdoor Hospitality Report.
For campground owners, this massive volume of travelers brings significant operational challenges, specifically around unfulfilled last-minute cancellations and guests arriving stressed after navigating tight roads with large rigs.
To address these friction points in the consumer planning process, tech platforms are introducing features that aim to alter how guests interact with properties.
Campendium recently launched Campendium RV PRO, a premium annual membership that introduces automated cancellation alerts and rig-specific routing. While designed as a consumer tool, the platform directly impacts how campground operators manage their daily revenue and front-desk logistics.
Easing Front-Desk Logistics and Arrival Stress
For business owners, consumer navigation anxieties frequently translate into late arrivals, check-in bottlenecks, and negative reviews that have nothing to do with the actual property. By shifting the logistical burden away from the traveler, tech providers aim to deliver more confident, relaxed guests to a campground’s front gate.
Mary Heneen, CEO of Campendium, highlighted this friction when explaining the operational realities that inspired the premium tier.
“Too often, that planning starts to feel like work — checking sold-out campgrounds, second-guessing the route, wondering if your rig will fit, or losing service right when you need it,” Heneen said.
Capturing Revenue from Last-Minute Cancellations
Beyond improving the arrival experience, automated rebooking features offer a one-stop approach to the industry’s longstanding problem of dead inventory from late cancellations. When a guest cancels, a site often sits empty because there is no efficient way to alert waitlisted campers.
The new platform introduces CAMPalerts, which sends automated text alerts to members when a sold-out campground has an opening. This feature notifies waitlisted campers when a site opens up, which could help operators fill last-minute vacancies without adding work for front-desk staff..
Heneen noted that the premium tool expands on their existing data to address these specific trip disruptions.
“Campendium’s free platform, including more than 50,000 campgrounds across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico and 150,000+ verified reviews from RVers, remains free. RV PRO adds planning tools built for the realities of RV travel: sold-out campgrounds, rig restrictions, spotty cell service, changing road conditions, and the occasional ‘are we sure this route works?’ moment,” Heneen explained.
Reducing Property Damage with Rig-Specific Routing
Property damage and liability are also constant concerns for operators, particularly those managing rural locations or parks with tight entrance clearings. When navigation tools fail to account for vehicle size, campgrounds bear the operational burden of guided rescues or physical damage to utilities and trees.
The integration of RV-Safe Navigation is designed to reduce these risks by mapping routes based on specific rig metrics, including height, weight, and propane status, to steer drivers away from low clearances or restricted roads.
For a campground owner, this means fewer infrastructure hazards and more predictable arrival windows. Additionally, upcoming offline map features and real-time overlays for cellular coverage and wildfire smoke ensure that guests remain informed even when traveling through remote corridors, keeping check-in schedules intact despite changing environmental conditions.
