The Virginia Campground Association (VCA) reported that 76% of travelers in 2026 are planning trips around major life events, citing new survey data from AAA that signals shifting demand patterns for outdoor hospitality businesses.
According to the survey, milestone-driven travel is centered on birthdays at 32%, family reunions at 30%, friends’ milestones at 29%, anniversaries at 22% and weddings at 19%. The trend is increasing interest in campgrounds that offer outdoor venues and scenic settings suited for celebrations.
The association indicated that milestone travel is extending demand beyond the traditional summer vacation season. Weddings, reunions, anniversary retreats and group gatherings are creating year-round booking opportunities for campgrounds and outdoor venues across Virginia.
The group also noted that social media plays a significant role in milestone-driven travel planning. Celebrations such as birthdays, engagements, reunions and weddings are frequently shared online, where visual content such as sunsets, campfires and event setups can influence destination selection.
The announcement said group decision-making often begins through direct messages and tagged posts, and user-generated content from real events at campgrounds can drive additional interest.
Separately, the association reported a legislative update involving House Bill 962, which proposed “predictive scheduling” requirements for hospitality employers in Virginia.
Nearly 3,000 members of Virginia’s hospitality community responded to an alert from the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging & Travel Association regarding the measure.
HB962 did not pass out of the subcommittee and will not advance during the 2026 legislative session. Crossover Day marks the deadline for bills to move out of committee, and measures that fail to advance are no longer considered for the session.
VCA, a component member of the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging & Travel Association, said it partners with the organization to support a favorable business climate for outdoor hospitality operators in Virginia.
The association is also preparing for its upcoming member meeting, where campground owners and operators will discuss marketing insights, partnership opportunities and operational observations as they plan for the upcoming season.
An informal gathering is scheduled to follow at Billsburg Brewery, located near the Jamestown Yorktown Foundation meeting site.
