According to a survey by the RV Rental Association (RVRA) conducted this spring, 41% of RV rental operators expect increased revenue in 2024 compared to last year. An additional 31% anticipate business will remain the same as in 2023.
In a press release, Scott Krenek, chairman of the RVRA and owner of Krenek RV in Coloma, attributes the forecast to several factors, including a boost in early spring demand linked to events like the April 8 solar eclipse. Krenek noted that 48% of rental companies reported repeat customers, and another 23% of companies indicated customers had rented multiple times previously.
“There still will be plenty of choices for those looking to rent an RV because 84 percent of the rental dealers surveyed believe manufacturers have supplied them with enough rental units for this coming peak season,” Krenek said.
The duration of RV rentals shows that 38% of companies indicated that the average rental in 2023 lasted five to six nights. Twenty-two percent reported rentals of seven nights or more, with 16% expecting even longer durations this year. Krenek pointed out that larger RVs are particularly popular among family renters, with 88% of dealers highlighting a preference for models that sleep at least three adults.
Most dealers, about 84%, offer towable RVs, which are suitable for families with vehicles capable of towing, such as the Ford F-series, Chevy Silverado, or RAM pickups. Krenek added that 22% of these dealers reported that three-quarters of their clients opted for “tow and go” rentals, using their own vehicles.
For those without a tow vehicle or the expertise to hook up an RV, many rental dealers offer a convenient solution. According to the survey, 30% of rental dealers noted that over 20% of their customers last year opted for a “delivery and set-up” service.
RV rentals are attractive lodging options for a wide range of events, including family reunions, music or food festivals, and shows involving dogs, horses, antique cars, or air shows, Krenek added.
RV Rental Advice
Before committing to an RV rental, Krenek recommends that consumers ask specific questions about pickup and drop-off hours, orientations for first-time renters, support during the trip, and terms of the security or damage deposit. He also urges renters to verify whether the RV described online matches the model available at pickup.
Moreover, Krenek emphasizes the importance of understanding the terms of the RV and component warranties, as well as any financing agreements. This knowledge is crucial for both renters and those considering renting out their own RVs.
