Public Comment Sought for Proposed Campground in Philipsburg Borough

Pennsylvania‘s Philipsburg Borough officials are seeking public input on a possible campground near the Cold Stream Dam/Project 70.

The project would be situated close to the soccer fields. Code Enforcement Officer Tim Ryder requested a zoning change and a letter of support for the proposed project from Rush Township at a recent meeting. The site is borough-owned and situated in Rush Township, as per a report.

Ryder is working on applying for a grant for the project. He said the borough did not receive funding for the project in the past due to the lack of public comment and support of the community.

The proposed campground would comprise ten sites with electricity. Two paved sites would be ADA-accessible. The other sites would be limestone gravel.

Each site would be approximately 34 feet in width, Ryder shared. There would be approximately ten feet between each site.

The cost of a site could be around $30 per night. This is based on rates at nearby state parks. Two vehicles would be allowed per site.

Ryder checks the recreational area, which is known to be a location for shady activities. If there were to be a campground, the area’s security is likely to alter. Still, the presence of the campground is a benefit, the report added.

Social media comments have generally been negative, but Ryder noted that in-person comments have been positive.

Residents can provide feedback on the proposed campground at the next borough meeting on February 21 at 7 p.m.
