In an effort to keep pace with escalating operational costs, Linn County Parks & Recreation has decided to introduce a $7 day-use parking fee at the Sunnyside County Campground

The new fee, which will be effective from June 9, was announced by Linn County Parks Director, Stacey Whaley.

Whaley explains that the Parks & Recreation department does not draw on the County’s General Fund, and thus, has to continuously devise sustainable financial strategies to cope with the rising cost of maintenance, supplies, and labor.

“Linn County tax dollars do not support Linn County Parks and haven’t for several years,” Whaley said.

The department, she added, has traditionally relied on an array of funding sources. This includes guest fees from various recreational activities such as camping, day use, and RV dumping, as well as sales from firewood and ice.

The department also benefits from Transient Lodging Tax funds and a segment of Oregon State RV licenses

Grants from the Oregon State Marine Board have also bolstered the Parks & Recreation budget over the years.

The last few decades have seen a significant expansion of the Linn County parks system, which now encompasses a wide range of facilities.

Despite the growth, however, the full-time staff has remained limited to just 13 people, bolstered by 35 to 40 seasonal staff during peak periods.

These dedicated individuals juggle a multitude of tasks, ranging from booking campsite reservations and cleaning restrooms, cabins, and yurts, to remodeling and maintaining park facilities and spaces.

Whaley emphasized that the incoming parking fees will play a vital role in offsetting the operational costs of the park.

She highlighted that those renting moorage at the Sunnyside Campground will not be charged separately as the parking fee is already included in the rental. Similarly, the fee will also be bundled with group shelter reservations, which will include 20 guest parking passes.

For those planning to visit Sunnyside or Lewis Creek, payment of the fee can be made conveniently at the entrance booths. If the booth is closed, a card-pay kiosk will be available so guests can pay and collect a ticket to display on their vehicle’s dashboard.

In addition, Whaley stressed that there is no fee for those choosing to park outside the campground and walk in.

The fee is also waived for those using the dog park or accessing the fishing pond.

In this way, the new policy maintains an inclusive approach, ensuring that as many people as possible can continue to enjoy the recreational opportunities offered by the Linn County parks system.
