New York Enhances Outdoor Accessibility with Interactive Map and $5 Million Investment

New York State is taking significant steps to make its outdoor recreational opportunities accessible to all. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has unveiled an interactive map showcasing accessible features across state lands and parks. This digital tool is part of a broader initiative to expand and enhance outdoor recreation for individuals of all ages and abilities statewide, according to an article by WNBF News Radio.

The DEC has invested over $5 million in state accessibility projects. These funds have been allocated to upgrade and create various accessible amenities. These include multi-use trails, wildlife viewing platforms, boat launches, and picnic areas. The improvements extend to green infrastructure features, walkways, boathouses, paddling launch systems, outdoor pavilions, fishing platforms, and numerous recreation areas.

At the heart of this initiative is the newly launched interactive map, which serves as a comprehensive guide to wheelchair-accessible features on state lands. The map highlights accessible areas and provides information on additional recreational opportunities such as boat launches, fishing access sites, backcountry features, hiking trails, and developed campgrounds.

DEC Interim Commissioner Sean Mahar expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “DEC welcomes outdoor adventurers of all ages and abilities to visit New York’s world-class State lands and is committed to expanding accessible outdoor recreation opportunities throughout the state.

“With easy-to-use enhanced mapping features and ongoing accessibility infrastructure improvements, DEC is working hard to ensure everyone can find and enjoy the abundant recreational opportunities and facilities in communities across New York State,” Sean added.

The interactive map showcases 266 destinations offering wheelchair-accessible outdoor recreation opportunities. These include 84 locations with accessible boating facilities and 58 sites featuring accessible fishing facilities. For overnight stays, the map identifies 44 locations with accessible camping facilities. Hiking enthusiasts will find 50 locations with accessible trails. The initiative also caters to beachgoers, with 10 locations offering accessible beach access routes, and picnickers, with 47 locations featuring accessible picnic facilities across the state.

The impact of these accessibility improvements extends beyond enhancing individual experiences. In 2020, outdoor recreation supported over 241,000 jobs and generated $21.1 billion in economic activity in New York State, underscoring the importance of making these opportunities available to as many people as possible.

The interactive map is more than just a tool for planning outdoor activities; it represents a broader shift towards inclusivity in outdoor recreation. By providing detailed information about accessible features, the DEC is empowering individuals with disabilities to explore and enjoy New York’s natural wonders with greater independence and confidence.

This initiative aligns with a growing awareness of the importance of accessible outdoor spaces for physical and mental well-being. The DEC’s efforts not only provide equal access to outdoor recreation but also promote community engagement and environmental appreciation among a diverse population.
