N.Y. State Campgrounds Embrace Same-Day Reservations for a Flexible Camping Experience

Camping enthusiasts can now enjoy the spontaneity of same-day reservations at all New York state campgrounds. The state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has introduced this change to reservation policies, ensuring a more accessible camping experience for everyone.

Starting this season, all 52 DEC campgrounds will accept same-day reservations, aligning them with the reservation window currently employed by the facilities operated by the State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

Campers must make reservations, and can now book a camping reservation as late as 5 p.m. on their desired day of arrival.

According to DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos, the updated reservation policy aims to accommodate last-minute campers who may have struggled to find available campsites in the past.

“While many campers book weeks or months in advance, there continues to be a high demand for last-minute bookings. Adding same-day reservations will allow our customers to check availability and book a reservation on their way to a campground,” Seggos said.

This change also allows campers to fill open spots between reservations more quickly than before.

Starting April 7, the public will be able to book a one-night stay for the 2023 season at any DEC campground, ensuring sites are available before arriving and preventing anyone from arriving to a full campground.

The shift in reservation policy has implications for private campground owners and operators in the nearby area. While some may experience increased competition due to the greater availability of state-run campsites, others might benefit from the potential increase in spontaneous camping trips.

As campers become more inclined to make last-minute plans, private campgrounds that offer flexible reservation policies could see a rise in bookings.

To further support this change, the DEC is providing resources to help campers navigate the new reservation system

With these changes, all New York state campgrounds now offer a more flexible and accessible camping experience for both last-minute adventurers and those planning their trips in advance. The new same-day reservation policy aims to meet the diverse needs of campers and contribute to a thriving camping culture in the state.

By embracing same-day reservations, New York state campgrounds are setting a precedent for accessibility and adaptability in the camping industry. As the trend towards more flexible reservation policies continues, it remains to be seen how private campground owners and operators will adapt to these changes and what the long-term impact on the camping market will be.
