This holiday season, more Americans are opting for road trips instead of flights. A recent study by Motel 6 and Studio 6 reveals that over half of those traveling for winter holidays will drive to their destinations, with just 13% choosing to fly. The survey of 2,000 holiday travelers indicates an increase in road travel, up 2% from the previous year, as many seek nearby destinations and aim to save on expenses.
The decision to travel by car is largely influenced by proximity and financial considerations. Nearly half of those surveyed (46%) report choosing road travel for shorter trips, while 26% aim to save money.
These travelers view the journey itself as a significant part of the experience, with 80% finding road trips add to their holiday enjoyment. Additionally, 39% of respondents admit to having a favorite or “assigned” seat in the car when traveling with family.
According to a press release, Julie Arrowsmith, president and CEO of G6 Hospitality, the parent company of Motel 6 and Studio 6, noted the enduring appeal of family road trips.
“There’s just something comforting and nostalgic about packing into the family car with a trunk filled with gifts and casseroles and road-tripping to your holiday celebrations. It’s no surprise we are seeing an uptick in this trusted travel choice this year given the current environment,” Arrowsmith explained.
Arrowsmith added that travelers value reliable and affordable lodging along the way, and with nearly 1,500 Motel 6 and Studio 6 locations nationwide, her company aims to provide a reliable option for these road-trippers.
For many travelers, familiar destinations remain a priority during the holiday season. Nearly 63% of respondents prefer returning to places they know well. Visiting family and friends ranks as a cherished tradition, with 50% naming it a highlight of their holidays and 54% using paid time off specifically to reconnect with loved ones.
The study also highlights the impact of overcrowding and limited sleeping arrangements at family homes, which leads some holiday travelers to seek alternative lodging. Over half of the respondents (52%) plan to stay with family, while others (14%) will rely on friends for accommodations. However, cramped spaces and the need for personal space prompt many to seek out hotels or motels within a day of arrival, with 19.6 hours as the average time before needing a break from group settings.
According to Arrowsmith, the appeal of a simple, affordable hotel option is clear. “It’s no secret that the holiday season brings joy and togetherness, but when paired with travel woes and high costs, the reason for the season can get lost,” said Arrowsmith.
The study was conducted between September 18 and September 20, by Talker Research on behalf of Motel 6. Surveying 2,000 Americans who celebrate winter holidays, the study provides insights into the choices shaping holiday travel trends this year.
