Hoodoo Point Campground Takes Center Stage in City Council’s Discussions

Hoodoo Point Campground in Tower City, Minnesota recently topped the city council’s agenda, sparking discussions on various campground-related topics according to an article by The Timberjay.

From rate increases for seasonal campers to the prospect of a new playground and regulations on storage units at campsites, the meeting shed light on the campground’s significance within the community.

The council’s deliberation on a potential rate increase for seasonal RV campers underscored the importance of balancing the needs of campers and the financial sustainability of the campground.

While a decision on the rate hike was postponed until September, this move reflects the council’s dedication to engaging the camping community in the decision-making process.

Mayor Dave Setterberg expressed his perspective on the rate increase, emphasizing the necessity of adjusting rates in line with market trends.

Council members Bob Anderson and Joe Morin echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the need to align with other campgrounds in the region.

Campground manager Randy Pratt also highlighted the substantial demand for Hoodoo Point’s camping spots, suggesting that the market could support a rate increase.

The discussion also delved into the state of the campground’s playground. Concerns were raised about its deteriorating condition and its classification as potentially unsafe by the county Health Department.

This issue prompted Mayor Setterberg to request written feedback from the health department regarding their concerns. Pratt explained that frost heaving and shoreline erosion had contributed to the playground’s degradation, bringing it closer to the water’s edge.

The council explored options for funding a new playground, with an estimated cost of approximately $94,000. Clerk-treasurer Michael Schultz noted the possibility of accumulating the necessary funds in the capital reserve account by the end of 2024. Funding avenues such as Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation were also considered to support this essential project.

Council member Josh Zika expressed his view on the rate increase, underscoring the campground’s premium location on Lake Vermilion’s shores. This unique waterfront feature contributes to the campground’s attractiveness and its potential to justify a rate adjustment.

Pratt raised concerns about long-term campers exceeding site limitations by erecting unauthorized structures, such as storage units and porches.

While the city’s rules allow for auxiliary structures, Pratt stressed the importance of adhering to the specified limits. He suggested addressing this matter through clear communication and potential consequences for non-compliance.

As Hoodoo Point Campground remained at the center of city council discussions, a portrait of community engagement emerged. These deliberations served as a testament to the city’s commitment to providing a dynamic and accommodating camping experience.

Isn’t it interesting how Mayor Dave Setterberg suggested forming a committee involving campground staff and community members for feedback? Councilmember Jane Thompson’s idea to seek grants for the playground is smart. 🤔 What do you think about these proposals? 🌟
