Traverse City State Park, one of Michigan’s most popular camping destinations, will close its campground for a significant renovation project beginning July 7, 2025. The closure, expected to last through the entire 2026 camping season, is part of a comprehensive upgrade designed to enhance the park’s amenities and visitor experience.
According to a press release, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) has allocated $8.5 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding for the project. Planned improvements include the addition of new camping amenities, upgrades to day-use areas, and enhanced vehicle and pedestrian access throughout the park. The project also involves updates to the contact station and the sanitation facilities to ensure improved accessibility and convenience for future visitors.
In addition to the campground, the park’s lodge will be closed and demolished as part of the renovations. However, the day-use area and beach will remain open, allowing visitors to continue enjoying these amenities during the renovation period.
“To accommodate these improvements, the campground will be closed from July 7, 2025, through the 2026 camping season…These exciting changes are a direct result of your feedback through the park’s 2021 general management plan,” MDNR indicated on its website.
Traverse City State Park’s popularity is reflected in its usage statistics. In a report by Detroit Free Press, in fiscal year 2023, it ranked fourth among Michigan state parks and recreation areas for the number of camp nights booked.
