A planning application has been submitted for a proposed glamping and campervan park at Cromane Strand in County Kerry, Ireland, with the development intended to formalize visitor accommodation and address existing informal parking and camping in the area.
Shauna Moriarty has applied for permission to develop the tourism, recreational and community facility on 1.38 hectares (3.41 acres) of family-owned land at Cromane Lower, Killorglin. The proposal would provide six glamping pods and nine campervan pitches, alongside a service and reception building, playground, events area, and parking for cars, bicycles, and motorcycles.
According to the planning application, informal campervan parking already takes place along the beachfront, including on land belonging to the applicant’s family. The application states that there are currently no purpose-built, serviced glamping or campervan facilities in the immediate area.
The proposal identifies sanitation and waste disposal as issues associated with informal visitor activity, according to RadioKerry. The applicant argues that establishing a managed facility could help reduce unmanaged parking and camping along the shoreline while providing visitors with dedicated services and improving how tourism activity is managed.
For outdoor hospitality operators, the application highlights a common development consideration in coastal and rural destinations: whether formal accommodation and visitor infrastructure can provide an alternative to unmanaged overnight stays while maintaining the character and environmental qualities of the surrounding area.
The proposed mix of accommodation, visitor services, and community space also indicates an approach that extends beyond overnight stays by incorporating facilities intended for local organizations and events.
The proposed events area would be available for community organizations and events, as well as tourism-related activities. The applicant says the development would support sustainable rural tourism and local businesses, while creating employment during construction and through the ongoing operation and servicing of the facility.
The site is located within a Visually Sensitive Area (VSA), which is a consideration in the planning assessment. The application states that the development has been designed to integrate with the surrounding rural and coastal landscape. Any decision will therefore need to consider the proposed development alongside the site’s landscape setting and other planning considerations.
Members of the public have until September 27, 2026, to make submissions or observations on the application. Kerry County Council is due to issue its decision by October 18, 2026.
If approved, the project would add dedicated glamping and campervan infrastructure to an area where, according to the application, visitors currently use informal parking and camping arrangements.
