Camping season is in full bloom in Michigan’s state parks as we head to the long Memorial Day weekend.
As per a report, following a record-breaking year in 2021, camping reservations for the Memorial Day weekend remain high.
The Department of Natural Resources says that reservations are currently up to 92% occupancy at state parks campgrounds, compared to the previous year, when campgrounds reported 95% occupancy.
Park rangers anticipate full campsites for tent and RV campers. They have been working for the past couple of weeks to prepare.
“We’re excited. We’re doing some last-minute things here to get everything ready for the camping season,” said Andrew Lundborg, park supervisor of Grand Haven State Park.
All my rangers are scrambling around getting things ready, but we’re excited to start another camping season.
For the first time in four years, rates increased in 2021, between $2 and $8 a night depending on the campground and day, while cabins and other lodgings increased by $10 a night.
The price hikes were in place to keep pace with increased crowds and higher operating costs. Lodging and camping fees make up around 51% of operating costs.
Although most sites are booked over the Memorial Day weekend, park rangers say it is possible to find an opening at some campgrounds, but campers might need to do a bit of digging.
