Michigan State Park Campgrounds Set to Reopen After Major Upgrades

Construction projects at four Michigan state park campgrounds are progressing, with reopening dates anticipated for the next summer. The campgrounds, located at Algonac State Park in Marine City, Ludington State Park in Ludington, Pinckney Recreation Area in Gregory, and Port Crescent State Park in Port Austin, have been closed for upgrades and renovations aimed at improving facilities for visitors.

Algonac State Park’s Riverfront and Wagon Wheel campgrounds are undergoing updates, including the addition of 127 full-hookup sites and road repaving. According to Kristen Bennett, development unit manager for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), most of the work is complete, with minor weather-dependent tasks like pavement repairs potentially extending into spring.

The Riverfront campground is set to reopen on March 22, with Wagon Wheel expected to reopen on May 15. “Overall, Algonac looks great, and I think our park users will be very pleased with all the park improvements including new roads, an expanded sanitation station and full hook-up camping sites,” Bennett explained, as reported by Detroit Free Press on December 6.

At Ludington State Park, three campgrounds have been closed since September for a project to pave the main road and Hamlin Lake day-use area parking lot, expand the Lake Michigan parking lot and warming shelters, and improve traffic and pedestrian flow at the entrance.

Despite closures, progress has been steady, with grading and concrete work nearing completion. Weather permitting, the park is slated to reopen by July 1.

Pinckney Recreation Area’s Bruin Lake campground has been closed to upgrade facilities, including a new sanitation station, a replacement shower and toilet building, and road improvements.

Demolition of the old building and foundation work began in October, with construction expected to conclude by July. Repaving of roads and relocation of the sanitation station are scheduled to begin in April. The Silver Lake day-use area is also under construction, with completion anticipated by late May.

Additionally, Port Crescent State Park’s modern campground has been closed for an enhancement project, including new roads, water and sewer lines, and a sanitation station upgrade. The campground will feature 12 new full-hookup sites, expanded sanitation facilities, and improved ADA-compliant campsites. The project is on track for a June 27 reopening.
