Mattel Donates More Than 1,000 Brave Barbie and Ken Dolls to Care Camp

The Mattel Children’s Foundation has donated more than 1,000 Brave Barbie and Brave Ken dolls, along with other toys, to Care Camps Foundation programs supporting children with cancer in hospitals and at home through its Play It Forward philanthropic initiative.

The donation, made in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, will support hospital-based pediatric oncology programs and Care Camps’ virtual Camp-in-a-Box programs, which extend camp experiences to children unable to attend in person or who are undergoing treatment.

The Brave Barbie and Brave Ken dolls were designed to recognize children experiencing hair loss while undergoing treatment for cancer and other serious illnesses. The additional toys provide opportunities for play, creativity and recreation for children participating in the programs.

“Partnerships like this allow us to bring moments of joy to children wherever they may be in their cancer journey,” said Jenna Berneck, executive director of Care Camps Foundation.

“Whether a child is able to attend camp, is receiving treatment in a hospital or is participating from home, every child deserves opportunities to play, connect, and experience the childhood moments that cancer can too often interrupt. We are incredibly grateful to Mattel Children’s Foundation for helping make those moments possible,” Berneck added.

Care Camps Foundation supports pediatric oncology camps and programs that provide children with cancer opportunities to experience outdoor activities and connect with peers at no cost to their families. Its programs serve children across the United States and Canada.

The partnership extends the foundation’s reach beyond traditional camp settings by providing toys and play opportunities to children receiving treatment in hospitals or participating remotely.

“We are so grateful for Mattel Children’s Foundation’s generosity and commitment to children,” Berneck said. “Seeing the smiles these toys have already created is a beautiful reminder that play can provide comfort, connection, and a much-needed sense of normalcy for a child going through cancer treatment.”

Mattel’s Play It Forward initiative has supported thousands of nonprofit organizations and millions of children and families since 1978. The philanthropic program draws on the company’s brands, resources and employees to support children and communities worldwide.

Care Camps Foundation funds specialized pediatric oncology camps that provide opportunities for children with cancer to build friendships, develop confidence and participate in outdoor activities. The programs are offered at no cost to children and their families.
