Florida Governor Signs Largest Tax Relief Package in State’s History

House Bill 7071, which provides more than $1.2 billion of tax relief for Floridians was approved by Governor Ron DeSantis earlier this month, including reducing state and county gas taxes.

On May 6, DeSantis signed the bill, which provides ten sales tax holidays for various items commonly purchased by Florida families, including fuel, diapers, disaster supplies, and tools.

In what seems to be a first-time major initiative, the package also includes suspending state and county gas tax for the entire month of October, allowing drivers to save about 25.3 cents per gallon.

“In Florida, we are going to support our residents and help them afford the goods that they need. Florida has been fiscally responsible, so we are in a good position to provide meaningful relief for families, right now,” DeSantis said.

Florida alone cannot “independently fix or outrun” issues causing increased prices, said Senate President Wilton Simpson. “However, we are working to ease the pain with broad-based sales tax relief and a month-long gas tax holiday.”

In an attachment to a member email, Florida RV Park and Campground Association (FRVCA) also reported that Freedom Week returns this year as sales tax holiday starts on July 1 and ends on July 7.

During the week, tax on retail sales of admissions to music events, sporting events, cultural events, specified performances, movies, museums, state parks, and fitness facilities will not be collected.  Sales of eligible boating and water activity supplies, camping supplies, fishing supplies, general outdoor supplies, residential pool supplies, and sporting equipment will also be tax-exempted.

Meanwhile, a new week-long (September 3-9) “Tool Time” sales tax holiday on tools for skilled trades like mechanics, carpenters, plumbers, and electricians might benefit the members of the RV sector, per the statement.

A two-year tax break for impact-resistant windows, doors, and garage doors from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2024 will provide $442.8 million in tax relief.

Lastly, a tax holiday (July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023) on Energy Star Appliances will allow $78.5 million in tax relief, while the industry can also benefit from a reduction in the mobile home tax rate from 6% to 3%.

There’s a captivating misconception about the tax relief package in Florida. It’s not just about providing financial relief to families. it also supports the state’s economy and small businesses. The inclusion of a sales tax holiday for hurricane preparedness supplies and the suspension of state and county gas taxes in October are remarkable moves. I believe this will not only help residents financially but also boost economic activity across the state.
