Joshua Tree National Park has implemented a campground fee increase, raising nightly rates by $10 to $15 as visitation numbers continue to rise. The updated fees took effect on December 1 and apply to all campgrounds and tours within the park.
The park recorded 3.2 million visitors in 2023, surpassing its 2021 record of over 3 million visitors. Visitation has steadily increased since the park began keeping records in 1941. By comparison, 2011 saw just under 1.4 million visitors.
The new rates place most campsite fees between $25 and $35 per night, up from the previous $15 to $25 range. Group sites, including those at Sheep Pass, have increased to $55 per night. The fee adjustment aligns Joshua Tree’s campground rates with similar sites in the region and adheres to federal pricing guidelines.
According to the National Park Service (NPS), the fee changes follow the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act, which requires that recreational fees remain proportional to the benefits and services provided and are periodically reviewed.
“The Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (FLREA) requires that recreational fees are appropriate to the benefits and services provided and are reviewed and updated regularly,” the NPS stated, as reported by CBS News on December 4.
Revenues generated through entrance and campground fees are allocated to maintain and improve park infrastructure, including campgrounds and other visitor facilities, while also supporting visitor services.
Fee adjustments at Joshua Tree reflect a broader trend across federal lands in California. Angeles National Forest also proposed raising fees at 11 campgrounds starting in 2024, with single-site fees increasing to $20 from the current rates of $5 or $12, depending on the location.
According to its website, the majority of Joshua Tree National Park’s 500 campsites are available by reservation, which can be made the same day or up to six months in advance through recreation.gov.
Visitors are advised to secure a site before entering the park, as cell service is limited. Reservations are especially recommended during holidays, weekends, and the busy spring season from October to May.
