Sunset Campground, located in the heart of Death Valley National Park near Furnace Creek, is a large, seasonally operated campground that primarily serves RV campers but is also open to tent and car campers.
The campground features 230 sites and operates on a first-come, first-served basis from October 15 through the end of the peak season.
Situated on open desert gravel, Sunset Campground offers minimal vegetation and limited amenities. Its central location provides expansive views of the desert landscape, but the lack of shade and privacy can be challenging for some visitors.
The campground is accessible via paved roadways, with overflow areas reachable by gravel paths. It is located near key park amenities, making it a practical choice for those exploring the park.
The campground does not provide electric hookups, showers, or individual fire grates. Instead, cooking is permitted only with gas stoves, and campfires are limited to two designated group fire rings.
Seasonal amenities include potable water, flush toilets, and a dump station for RVs. Cell phone reception is generally reliable, but there is no internet connectivity on-site. Basic supplies are available year-round at the nearby camp store.
While its amenities are basic, Sunset Campground is particularly popular among RV travelers due to its accommodating site sizes, with RVs up to 60 feet and trailers up to 50 feet permitted.
However, it also attracts car and tent campers looking for a centrally located, no-reservation camping option. Visitors are advised to come prepared for the stark desert environment and to plan for cooking and sun protection accordingly.
To reach the campground, travelers from Las Vegas can take US-95 north to NV-373 south, transitioning to CA-127 and following CA-190 west into the park.
From Los Angeles, the route involves I-15 north to Baker, then CA-127 north and CA-190 west. This location serves as a convenient base for exploring Death Valley’s unique landscapes and attractions.
