The RV Technical Institute (RVTI) and RV Women’s Alliance (RVWA) recently launched their first all-women’s RV technician Level 1 course of the year at Aqua-Hot’s facility in Frederick, CO. Among the participants was Dee Pietz, owner of Black Hills RV Sales and Service in Rapid City, SD, who shared her experiences and insights from the training.

Dee Pietz has been a notable figure in the RV industry for nearly 15 years. She transitioned from managing an RV dealership to starting her own business with her husband in Rapid City.

The couple has operated Black Hills RV Sales and Service for over two and a half years, specializing in repairs and remodels. Pietz decided to join the all-women’s Level 1 course to gain certification and enhance her skill set, as per the News & Insights report of the RV Industry Association (RVIA).

The weeklong course, designed to cover a wide array of RV technical skills, was an intensive learning experience. “I couldn’t believe all of the information we went through in just five days,” Pietz said.

She was particularly impressed by the instructor, Bill Stewart, whose extensive knowledge and patient teaching style facilitated a comprehensive learning environment.

The RVWA played a critical role in organizing the event, providing logistical support and ensuring a smooth experience for all participants. “The lunches they provided us with during the training were amazing,” Pietz noted, highlighting the Alliance’s attention to detail and participant well-being.

A significant part of the training involved a tour of the Aqua-Hot facility. Pietz was impressed by the facility’s cleanliness and the staff’s friendliness. She gained valuable insights into the Aqua-Hot systems, which she already sold, enhancing her ability to serve her customers better.

“I have sold RVs that have the Aqua-Hot system in them, and I always found it very impressive, but I found it even better when we toured the facility,” she said.

Networking with fellow participants was another highlight of the course for Pietz. The diverse group of women included professionals from various backgrounds, such as managers of women’s camping organizations and mobile technician businesses. This diversity enriched the learning experience and fostered new professional relationships.

Stepping out of her comfort zone to attend the training alone was a significant personal milestone for Pietz. The positive experience not only boosted her confidence but also inspired her husband to join the RVTI’s program.

Together, they studied for the exams, and he is now certified in Level 1. They plan to continue their education in Levels 2, 3, and 4, further expanding their expertise.

The skills and knowledge gained from the training have had a profound impact on Pietz’s business. She highly recommends the RV Technical Institute’s program, praising its comprehensive curriculum and supportive community. “With my experience and training, we studied together, he took the exams, and is now certified in Level 1, too,” she shared.

Women interested in starting or advancing their RV technician careers are encouraged to apply for the remaining all-women’s Level 1 course. Additionally, those who have completed Level 1 can apply for the Level 2 course to further build upon their skills.
